Monmouth Town

A warm welcome to you and thanks for visiting our site.  This is a personal appraisal of Monmouth Town.  Monmouth is situated at the top of the Wye Valley which contains the world famous Tintern Abbey.  It has three secondary schools - a very successful comprehensive with approx. 1400 pupils and two public schools - Haberdashers Monmouth Boys and Haberdashers Monmouth Girls, all situated within easy walking distance of the town centre.

The town itself has a range of places of worship - Roman Catholic, Baptist and Methodist as well as the Parish Church - Church in Wales. The Bishop of Monmouth, who doesn't live in Monmouth,  also happens to be the Archbishop of Wales -the Most Revd. Dr Rowan Williams; his Cathedral is called St Woolas and is in Newport ( approx. 20 miles distant).

There are two well equipped leisure centres open to the public, complete with swimming pools and fitness suites - one based in Monmouth Boys school and the other in Monmouth Comprehensive school.  There is a private fitness centre in Church Street.

There are six inns in the main street of the town which includes Weatherspoons, and several more within easy walking distance.  There is only one hotel in the town centre offering 14 rooms but some others are nearby and there are a  lot of B&B.  More information can be obtained through the Tourist Centre to be found underneath the arches in the town square.  The square features the statue of Charles Rolls of Rolls Royce fame and Henry V who was born in Monmouth Castle.  Castle house is now the headquarters of the Royal Monmouth Royal Engineers and they have a museum open to the public.  The Nelson Museum is found in the post office complex and features many items of Lord Nelson who is reputed to have visited Monmouth and taken tea at the Kymin - a roundhouse at the top of the nearby Kymin mountain overlooking Monmouth.

The town has a range of shops including Waitrose, Somerfield, Dixons, Boots, Dorothy Perkins and the National Trust.  Most of the shops are small  interesting and in private hands.  One end of the town features the only Mediaeval Bridge in Great Britain and there are plans to put another bridge nearby.

There are local bus and taxi services.  Cardiff, Newport, Hereford, Gloucester and Bristol are all  within 40 miles of Monmouth.   The nearest rail link  being approx.20 miles away at either Newport, Abergavenny or Hereford.

There are two very good golf courses nearby and even more within 10 miles.  Monmouth features many clubs and societies and has a strong musical tradition with Monmouth Choral Society and the Monmouth Festival attracting people from a very wide area.  U3A has over 100 members.  The town also has an annual Agricultural show which is perhaps one of the largest one day event in the country.  Canoeing on the river is a very popular pastime and many people belong to Monmouth Rowing Club.

Monmouth is a very nice place to live in.  It is a bordertown with very few of the problems that one reads about in the papers.  House prices are reasonable- probably starting at around £60,000 for a 3 bedroom semi through to approx. £300.000 for much larger properties.  Within 10 minutes walking distance in any direction is countryside open to the public with many footpath and one or two Vineyards, other interesting churches and hostelries.  Just outside Monmouth there are amazingly two famous recording studios- Rockfield and Nimbus, and their visitors welcome the privacy that Monmouth gives them.

Should you visit Monmouth in the future we would be very pleased to welcome you at St Mary's Church - the one with the spire.  It is open every day with Sunday services being at 8.00am  :  10.00am :  11.30am  and 6.00pm - Choral Evensong on the last Sunday of every month.
