Church history
Overmonnow

Overmonnow parish comprises the southern end of the
historic town of Monmouth. There is a small industrial estate, but most of
the parish consists of housing; the population is being enlarged by the
building of around six hundred new houses. A program for renovating
Drybridge House for 'Bridges' and other community use is also an exciting
chapter in the life of the parish.
The congregation at St Thomas' is friendly and informal
- there is a warm atmosphere to the worship and visitors are always
welcomed. There is an adult choir and a short child-oriented Family/All
Age Service. This takes place on the first Sunday of the month at 10am; we
are fortunate in having the involvement of the Guides and Brownies, who
participate in the service.
A Bible Study Group for the three parishes meets
monthly. There is also a quiet hour on a Thursday, once a month.
The Christian community at St Thomas' is aware of the
need for mission and anticipates that the new housing development will
prove an opportunity for outreach and service.
The church and Wayside Calvary attract many visitors,
particularly during the summer months when the town and camping site are
full of holiday makers. The church is left open all day every day during
daylight hours for viewing and for private prayer - its' visitors' books
reflect the diversity of those who appreciate finding the church open.

Mitchel Troy

Mitchel Troy is a country parish with a mixture of the
long established farming community and retired incomers; it is a
close-knit and friendly community which has a lively social calendar.
The church offers mainly traditional worship and forms
an important part of the life of the village; it is well attended for a
small rural population. The addition of a monthly Family/All Age Service
is hoped to encourage some of the younger villagers and to provide an
introduction to the rich Christian heritage of this region. This is now
fully established, and takes place on the second Sunday of the month at
11.00am.
The church is open during daylight hours for viewing
and for private prayer.

Wonastow

Wonastow Parish is a rural village with a population of
under one hundred. Those who attend the weekly service are a handful, but
there is a great deal of regard and affection for the church by the wider
community as witnessed by the successful restoration programme in recent
years.
The church is normally locked but visitors can obtain
the key locally by prior arrangement with the Vicar.
